Homework Policy

Richmond Street School has a homework policy for each grade level. First grade policy is twenty minutes of homework and ten minutes of reading each day.

Each Friday, a folder will be sent home with your child with homework for the week. A cover sheet will explain what to do and when. The homework will consist of a different subject each day (sight word practice, writing, phonics, math…). A Reading Link will have sight words that correspond to the weekly story we read in our literature series. Please have your child practice reading the words often to be better able to read the weekly story. A reading diary will be included each week to write the books read together or independently each day. Three to four math home links will also need to be completed. Please be sure and keep your child’s Math Home Link book in a safe place at home. This math homework should be completed with you and your child together, in order, as they correspond to the daily math lesson.

The completed homework packet and the completed home links should be returned to school on Friday. Please be sure and have your child finish all pages in the homework packet as it will serve as important review of concepts learned in class.

On Fridays, I will check the homework packet to see that it was completed correctly. If everything looks correct, I will put a star on the front cover sheet. This star lets you know I have seen the homework. If I have any comments for you, I will write them on the cover page. If you have any questions / concerns / comments regarding any page in the homework packet, please write them on the cover sheet as well. This serves as our communication during homework time.

Please remember that homework is a school policy and is used to reinforce skills learned in school and to encourage independent study habits for your child. Thank you for your support in helping your child develop important, life long study skills.
